Advanced Laser Lipolysis uses a laser to liquefy areas of unwanted fat which can then be suctioned away smoothly instead of using a high pressure vacuum such as in traditional liposuction. There are several different laser devices on the market now. At Cosmetica we utilise a 980nm Diode Laser. The laser breaks down the fat into liquid debris and the liquefied fat can then be removed with gentle suction or for smaller areas just left to be safely and simply eliminated by natural means. The laser also stimulates collagen growth in the skin, leading to skin tightening helping achieve a smooth, sculptured look.
The Advantages of Advanced Laser Lipolysis
There are several advantages of Laser Lipo compared to traditional liposuction:
- Minimal discomfort
- Local anaesthetic as compared to general anaesthetic
- Minimal downtime (most patients can resume normal daily activities the next day)
- Compression garments are only worn for 1-2 weeks as opposed to 6-8 weeks
- Side-effects such as pain, bruising, loose skin, scarring and irregularities are reduced
Frequently asked Questions
Is Laser Lipo suitable for you?
Laser Lipo can help remove stubborn localised pockets of fat in areas such as love handles, upper and lower abdomen, double chin, inner and outer thighs, hips, bottom, upper arms, face and male breast. However, it should not be considered a weight-loss procedure. If you are in good health, follow a sensible diet and have an active lifestyle and are not overweight but you wish to lose stubborn pockets of fat, Laser Lipo is ideal – whatever your age.
What happens during the procedure?
First you will be offered a free initial consultation where you can discuss your needs with our in house doctor. This is a good opportunity to discuss any concerns, expectations, the procedure in detail and how much it will cost. The procedure itself may take as little as 45 minutes. After local anaesthetic is applied to the area, the laser probe is inserted through a tiny incision (1-3mm) in the skin. Once in contact with the fat, the laser breaks down the fat into a liquid debris. At the Knightsbridge Laser Clinic we opt to gently aspirate (suck out) the liquified fat as this enables larger amounts to be removed and can usually speed up the results. For smaller areas aspiration is not necessary. Most patients start to see improvements around six to eight weeks and final results after six to seven months (sometimes even longer), depending on the treatment area. If, however, you want to remove a large amount of fat, you may need a further session four months after the first.
Does it hurt?
All laser lipolysis treatments are performed using local anaesthetic. You will therefore be awake. Most find the procedure easily tolerable and comfortable. You will experience some tugging and occasionally minor stinging.
What aftercare is needed?
After having a laser lipolysis treatment, patients wear a special compression garment for seven to 14 days to help minimize bruising and swelling (or one to two days if you‘re having a facial treatment). Antibiotics are also usually given to further reduce the risk of infection. You will be given full post treatment written and verbal guidelines. We recommend eating a sensible low fat diet, drinking plenty of water and maintaining a healthy exercise routine afterwards, however it isn‘t advisable to take part in any strenuous sports for seven to 10 days or to have an intense massage for four to five weeks.
Are there any side-effects?
Laser lipolysis has been used in other countries for years and thousands of treatments have been performed without any serious problems reported. Most people report a dull background ache for a few days and occasional mild bruising. You may also experience some swelling, especially during the first few days. You will be able to leave the clinic straight after your treatment and although we usually advise home rest for a few hours, if necessary you could return to your day to day non-strenuous activities immediately.
Are results predictable?
Yes. During your initial pre-treatment consultation the doctor will assess your suitability for laser lipo. You need to have realistic expectations and once your goals are agreed pre-treatment photos are taken. After your treatment you will routinely be offered two follow-up appointments, three months and six months after your treatment and the results assessed.
